Festival Express Tour....
Bell
has plenty of tales of Rock ’N’ Roll excess, many of them
during the Festival Express Tour, which featured the Flying Burrito
Brothers, Janis Joplin, Delaney, Bonnie & Friends, and the Grateful
Dead. “We’d play the concerts and couldn’t wait to
get back on the train,” he says. “It was great fun. At one
point when we ran out of liquor, we had people running up and down the
train with shoeboxes, asking for 'money for the people.' We stopped
in Saskatchewan or somewhere and just emptied out a liquor store."
"Then
there was the three-day party at Janis Joplin’s house in San Francisco
where a tattoo artist showed up and all the women wanted to get tattoos
like the heart on Janis’ left breast. Unfortunately, the artist
got drunk, and all these tattoos ended up as big red blotches!”
